TRANSITION OF COMMONWEALTH PETROLEUM REGULATORY FUNCTIONS TO THE NATIONAL OFFSHORE PETROLEUM TITLES ADMINISTRATOR (NOPTA)
On the 1 January 2012 responsibility for upstream petroleum regulatory functions, beyond three nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline, will rest with the Commonwealth’s newly established National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA).
The Department of Mines and Petroleum are working with the Commonwealth Authorities with the objective of ensuring this transition is as smooth as possible for all Industry participants.

Petroleum and Geothermal Services
The Petroleum Division of the Department of Mines and Petroleum is responsible for the approval and administration of petroleum titles and associated operational activities. These processes include:
Preparing the release of acreage for exploration and administering the bidding system;
Assessment of applications and the grant of title;
Title administration and collection of fees;
Approval of operational activities (e.g. drill a well, conduct a survey);
Native Title negotiation;
Stakeholder consultation; and
Ensuring compliance under the relevant legislation.
The Executive Director of the Petroleum Division is committed to delivering a first class regulatory service that provides clarity and transparency in all aspects of its operations.
