The Bulong site is located approximately 40km east of Kalgoorlie adjacent to Lake Yindarlgooda. Mining operations commenced on the former mining lease in the 1990s with the construction of a tailings storage facility (TSF) and evaporation ponds. The operating company went into receivership and effectively abandoned the site in 2005. Bulong was selected as a pilot site as part of the Abandoned Mines Program due to concerns expressed by the community and the potential for pollution to the adjacent lake system.
Site investigations and stakeholder consultation for the project commenced in 2018.
