Pro-Force is a legacy left behind in Western Australia’s first Goldfields settlement.
The Pro-Force Plant Site is approximately 2 kilometres southeast of the Coolgardie town-site on the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway. The site is adjacent to a public use area and water reserve ‘the Gorge’ which is regularly visited by locals and tourists, particularly when full of water.
The old processing site had been in situ for more than a decade and had been a public safety concern for the Shire of Coolgardie and the local community. In response to the community’s safety concerns about the abandoned site, Pro-Force was selected as a pilot site for priority inclusion in the Abandoned Mines Program.
To address these public safety concerns, the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) held a public auction in November 2015 for the sale of the Pro-Force infrastructure, including hoppers, a processing tank, walkways, stairs and earthmoving equipment. The infrastructure was successfully sold and by early 2016, the plant and equipment had been removed from the site.
The Abandoned Mines team visited Coolgardie during February 2016 to begin the stakeholder identification process. Since then, the Abandoned Mines Team has undertaken consultation with a range of stakeholders, including the Shire of Coolgardie and underlying tenement holders, to identify the key concerns for the site. A Community Workshop was held by DMP in August 2016 at the Coolgardie Recreation Centre, providing an opportunity for members of the local community to provide input into the rehabilitation plans.
The next stage of the Pro-Force project is to develop the scope of works required to address the remaining concerns, using information collected from stakeholder consultation and site assessments.
DMP will release further status updates on the Pro-Force Plant Site through the Environment Division's eNewsletter.
