Nominations now open for Community Partnership Award

Community groups and resource companies are being urged to submit their nominations for DMP's prestigious new award
Date: Monday, 01 February 2016

Nominations are open for a prestigious new award aimed at recognising the achievements of communities and resources companies that work together.

Today (Monday February 1 2016) the Department of Mines and Petroleum's (DMP) officially launches its exciting new Community Partnership Resources Sector Award.

The accolade will publicly celebrate examples of outstanding leadership that have helped to build strong community partnerships and created positive and meaningful outcomes for communities throughout Western Australia.

DMP Executive Director Mineral Titles Dr Ivor Roberts said the new award would provide a platform for entrants to showcase their innovative partnership building practices.

"The Community Partnership Award allows resources companies that continue to raise the bar and set new benchmarks in community consultation and partnerships to further their reputation," Dr Roberts said.

"By working together to address local concerns, resources companies and communities can help to build relationships that result in ongoing positive outcomes for all involved. This award will celebrate those partnerships."

Any community group, individual or company operating within Western Australia’s minerals, energy resources or extractive industries is eligible to nominate a project for DMP's Community Partnership Award.

All entries will be assessed against three criteria. These are leadership/innovation in engagement, benefits of the collaboration and commitment to providing sustainable and enduring outcomes.

"Nominees will be judged against the selection criteria, not other applicants, meaning more than one award can be presented each year," Dr Roberts said.

"I would therefore encourage as many community groups and resource companies as possible to submit a nomination for this prestigious new accolade."

Over the coming weeks Dr Roberts and other DMP staff will be visiting a number of regional DMP offices across the State to host information sessions about the awards and answer any questions stakeholders might have.

All award entries must be received by Friday 29 April. Submissions will then be considered by an Assessment Panel before a Selection Committee, chaired by DMP Director General Richard Sellers, makes the final decision.

Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion will present the winners with their awards at the annual DMP Awards for Excellence night in September/October, which will also incorporate the Golden Gecko Awards for Environmental Excellence.
