A new award to acknowledge Western Australian resources industry organisations that build outstanding community partnerships was launched by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion last night.

Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) Executive Director Mineral Titles Dr Ivor Roberts said the Community Partnership Award will recognise resources companies that go beyond merely gaining a social licence to operate.

“Meaningful community engagement is essential to operating a successful resources project in this State,” Dr Roberts said.

“By working closely with communities and community groups to understand local concerns and issues, resources companies and communities can build relationships that result in ongoing positive outcomes for all involved.

“This award will help build the reputation of Western Australian resources industry organisations that are raising the bar and setting new benchmarks in community consultation and partnerships.”

Any company or individual operating within Western Australia’s minerals, energy resources or extractive industries is encourages to nominate a project for the Community Partnership Award.

Community Partnership Award nominees will be assessed against the selection criteria not other applicants, meaning more than one award can potentially be presented each year.

From 2016, the DMP will host an annual Awards for Excellence night each October that will incorporate the presentation of the new Community Partnership Award and the Golden Gecko Awards for Environmental Excellence.
