Who issues guidelines and other guidance?

Guidelines are issued under the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 after endorsement by the Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC). Resources Safety also produces other guidance material, such as information sheets, audits, pamphlets, posters and toolbox presentations.

Find out more about the role and objectives of MIAC at What is the Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC)?

Guidelines and guidance issued under the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004 may also apply to mining operations. Refer to Dangerous goods safety - guidance.

Although some guidance material was prepared under the auspices of previous departments and divisions, it is still valid.

Audits

High impact function (HIF) audits examine the way certain hazardous tasks are performed in the workplace. The process looks at the task through the organisation from inception to completion, starting with the organisation’s policies and procedures to their application by an operator.

The audits provided are those used by mines inspectors. A template is provided that may be adapted by an organisation to suit its needs. The accompanying guideline provides information on how the audit might be applied.
