Notifying appointment of alternate quarry manager

Background

Where the quarry manager is subject to a commute schedule, an alternate quarry manager must be appointed to assume the duties of the quarry manager in accordance with that commute schedule.

Refer to Notifying appointment of quarry manager for details regarding required qualifications.

Important note: If the quarry manager or alternate quarry manager of a mine is incapacitated from performing his or her duties or is expected to be absent from the mine (otherwise than in accordance with a commute schedule) or unavailable to perform the duties of quarry manager, the principal employer must appoint an eligible person to act as the deputy of the quarry manager or alternate quarry manager during the period of incapacity, absence or unavailability. This appointment does not require notification.

Who is responsible for the notification?

The district inspector for the region must be informed by either the principal employer or registered manager (if authorised to do so by the principal employer).

Refer to s. 38 of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994.

Important note: The principal employer or registered manager must inform the district inspector within 24 hoursthrough the Departments Safety Regulation System (SRS) of every appointment of an alternate quarry manager.

A log of the periods of duty and a copy of the signed letter of appointment must be kept in the mine record book.

Notification of appointments must be submitted online using the Notifications sub-system in the Safety Regulation System (SRS)

The principal employer or registered manager can notify the department of a statutory appointment, or a person acting on their behalf.

A Company Administrator (CA) or a Company Representative can enter information into SRS. The CA can assign the role of Company Representative to any person required to notify appointments.

The completed and signed appointment letter needs to be attached to the notification of appointment in SRS.
