Welcome to the first edition of Petroleum News from the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS).
The former Department of Mines and Petroleum merged with parts of the Department of Commerce to form the new department, DMIRS, on 1 July 2017. While the name has changed the Petroleum Division is still the State’s regulator for the petroleum sector and it is business as usual within the new business group of Resources, Titles and Compliance.
This edition will bring you up to date with the call for nominations being sought from industry for acreage release areas in onshore and State Waters regions for consideration for release in 2018. Also a reminder that State Acreage Release Round 1 of 2017 bids are still open.
Also a few notes for the diary under the events tab – in particular the Petroleum Open Day in Perth on 15 September 2017. Don’t miss it!
The former Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) amalgamated with parts of the Department of Commerce to form the new Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) as of 1 July 2017. DMIRS has an expanded role incorporating regulation of the following areas:
Resources Titles and Compliance
Safety
Industry Regulation and Consumer Protection

Onshore Canning Basin - Current Licensing, Round 1 of 2017
Work program bids close 1 February 2018.
“Interest in the Canning Basin has revived significantly in recent years, with new oil plays discovered at Ungani 1 and Ungani Far West 1.
There are five release areas in the central and southern Canning Basin. The southern two release areas are mainly in the Kidson Sub-basin, while the northern three release areas are mainly in platform and terrace tectonic elements. These areas may have subsalt (Ordovician) and suprasalt (Devonian) plays. Release area size ranges from 5324 km2 to 6667 km2.
'The best remaining frontier prospects lie … in older basins with a high preservation potential such as intracratonic basins with evaporite seals' - Duncan S Macgregor, BP, 1996
Release packages include prospectivity information for release areas and relevant basins, available data listings, bid assessment guidelines, land access and environment considerations, schedule of fees, and how to make a valid application for an Exploration Permit (online only). This information is available on our acreage release page.
