New field guide just released

A Field Guide to Perth and Surrounds by John A Bunting is an excellent new resource compiled to support the teaching of Earth and Environmental Science in Western Australian schools.

The guide covers six geologically significant sites in and around Perth, chosen for their ease of access, parking, safety and abundance of quality outcrops. The locations cover all three rocks types (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic), climate change, structural geology, mining in Western Australia, and the environment.

The guide consists of 111 A5 pages, printed in full colour with colour-coded sections, and ring-bound for ease of use and durability in the field. With detailed directions, including points of the compass, the guide does better than many 4x4 guides without having to revert to GPS navigation aids.

Copies of the guide can be purchased from a number of outlets, including online from the Geological Society of Australia and the Science Teacher's Association of Western Australia.

For those living in Perth, copies are available from Boffins Technical and Specialist Books, 806 Hay Street, Perth, Western Australia.

Training in GSWA databases and online systems

You are invited to attend a free training session hosted by the Department of Mines and Petroleum to demonstrate current online systems. This is your opportunity to try these services for yourself and chat with the staff who create and manage them.

The format is an interactive presentation which includes navigating the DMP website, searching for publications, finding mineral deposits using MINEDEX, finding digital datasets using the Data and Software Centre, open file mineral exploration reports using WAMEX, and bringing it all together with the interactive map viewer (GeoVIEW.WA). GeoMap.WA, a new GIS viewer for Windows, will also be demonstrated.

The morning sessions will be a high-level fast demonstration and overview of the use of all the programs. At the afternoon sessions, participants will be able to practise using the programs with their own actual examples and get some one-on-one advice about individual issues. You can attend one or both sessions.

Report 112 Whicher Range tight gas sands study
by Western Australian energy research alliance (wa:era)

Report 112 presents the results of studies performed by scientists with Curtin University, The University of Western Australia, and CSIRO under the direction of the Western Australian energy resource alliance (wa:era) into the performance of the unconventional tight gas reservoir of the Whicher Range gas field in the southern Perth Basin. The project was commissioned by GSWA under the Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS).

This is a compendium of reports presenting findings of geoscience research covering a broad spectrum of topics relating to the characterization of unconventional, tight gas sands. It focuses on the long, complex history of largely unsuccessful endeavours designed to appraise the large, onshore, Whicher Range gas field in the southern Perth Basin. The exploration experiences determined that tight gas sands present special challenges and require new approaches to future exploration, drilling, well completion and evaluation practices to successfully develop unconventional reservoirs. The reports investigate the nature and problems of tight gas sand reservoir development from a multi-disciplinary perspective, collectively providing (by analogy) an evaluation template for the region and beyond.
