Information sessions on the highly debated topic of ‘fraccing’ go to the Kimberley.
The Kimberley communities of Broome and Derby will have the chance to learn more about the regulatory processes and get information on the highly debated topic of ‘fraccing’ at two Open Days to be hosted by the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) later this month.
The information days are a direct response to requests from communities for information on shale and tight gas and hydraulic fracture stimulation and are part of the DMP’s ongoing commitment to stakeholder engagement .
DMP is the lead State Government regulator responsible for ensuring the industry operators adhere to the State’s environmental and safety rules, which are the strongest in Australia.
“There is no doubt energy security is important for WA communities, however the method of extracting gas from shale and tight rock, hydraulic fracture stimulation (or fraccing), and possible potential risks are seen by some members of the community as controversial,” DMP Executive Director Petroleum Jeff Haworth said.
“It is important to keep in mind that there are risks associated with any activity, and DMP is committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure the industry is managed responsibly, with the safety and wellbeing of our communities and environment at the forefront of our minds.
“Members of the public have been exposed to a lot of conflicting information over the past few years so, if you have ever wondered whether what you have heard about shale and tight gas is accurate or not, then this public information session is an opportunity to put your questions to State Government experts.”
Mr Haworth said State Government experts would be in attendance to answer questions from the public during the informal information sessions.
“By attending these information sessions members of the public will have the opportunity to review up-to-date information, speak directly with government experts, ask questions and take information home,” he said.
“This is also an opportunity for you to share your concerns with government regulators.”
