An Environment Plan (EP) forms part of the environmental documentation required to accompany an application for approval to carry out petroleum and/or geothermal activities in Western Australia and must be submitted to the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) in accordance with the requirements of the:
- Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources (Environment) Regulations 2012
- Petroleum Pipelines (Environment) Regulations 2012
- Petroleum (Submerged Lands) (Environment) Regulations 2012
An EP is a management document which is designed to demonstrate that all environmental risks and impacts associated with a petroleum and/or geothermal activity are reduced to as low as reasonably practicable, and at all times carried out in a manner consistent with the principles of ecologically sustainable development.
Where temporary or short term modifications to the activity are required with no significant increase to, or additional environmental impacts or risks identified, DMIRS may agree to the submission of an amendment to an approved EP in the form of a Bridging Document or a Written Notification.
An EP must include an Oil Spill Contingency Plan (OSCP) in accordance with the Regulations. An OSCP will not be approved prior to the approval of an EP in accordance with the legislative requirements.
