Applicants for the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s (DMP) new Community Partnership Resources Sector Award are being urged to make sure they get their nominations in before submissions close at 5pm on Friday April 29.
The department’s prestigious new award will publicly celebrate examples of outstanding leadership which have helped to build strong community partnerships and created positive, lasting and meaningful outcomes.
Any community group, individual or company operating in the State’s minerals, energy resources or extractive industries is eligible to apply.
DMP’s Executive Director Mineral Titles Dr Ivor Roberts said it was important that any communities and resource industry groups wishing to be considered for the award submit their applications before the end of the week.
“Resource companies become involved with the local communities at various levels and this award will enable us to showcase and celebrate those outstanding partnerships which have resulted in mutual and lasting benefits,” Dr Roberts said.
“The winning nominee will be one which sets an example to industry of innovation and excellence in community partnerships.
“As this is the first year we have launched the awards, I would urge anyone who is considering entering a submission to ensure that they do so on time to make sure that they are in with a chance of being part of this historic event.”
Over the past few months DMP staff has been busy visiting communities across Western Australia to promote the awards and engage with stakeholders through a series of information sessions.
“Since the nomination process got underway in February we’ve been able to visit a wide range of different communities across Western Australia - from Bunbury to Broome and Kalgoorlie to Kununurra” Dr Roberts said.
“The amount of interest and enthusiasm demonstrated by all those who have attended our information sessions has been very encouraging and we’ve heard first-hand about some innovative partnerships bringing real benefits.
“This is exactly what we were hoping for when we launched the Community Partnership Award, however it’s important that applicants now formally submit their nominations so that we can give them the recognition that they deserve.”
Winners of the Community Partnership Resources Sector Award will be presented at the inaugural DMP Awards for Excellence night which will be coupled with the annual Golden Gecko Awards for Environmental Excellence on Thursday October 27.
The Golden Gecko is already known for recognising leading practice and innovation towards the responsible development of the State’s resources.
With the award now in its twenty-fifth year, the department’s new Awards for Excellence night will be the perfect backdrop to this exciting milestone.
On the night, the achievements of the finalists from both awards will be publicly highlighted before Minister for Mines and Petroleum Sean L’Estrange presents the winners.
