DMP has charged Crushing Services International Pty Ltd in relation to the death of a Pilbara mine worker in August last year.
The Department of Mines and Petroleum has charged Crushing Services International Pty Ltd (CSI) in relation to the death of a Pilbara mine worker in August last year.
Electrician Kurt Williams died on 14 August 2013 while working as a contractor at Fortescue Metal Group’s Christmas Creek mine.
His employer, CSI, has been charged under the Mines and Safety Inspection Act for failing to provide a safe working environment.
Mr Williams was greasing a motor when he was fatally crushed by a ladder attached to a tripper unit at the top of the ore processing facility.
DMP Acting Executive Director for Resources Safety Ivor Roberts said the charges should send a strong warning to mining companies across the State.
“Tragedies like the death of Mr. Williams are solemn reminders of why safety needs to be the number one priority for all mine operators,” he said.
“One death is one too many – we want every mining worker out there returning to their family and friends, safe and sound at the end of their rosters.
“While the majority of mining operators in WA operate to high safety standards, the department will hold to account those who aren’t doing the right thing.”
The first court mention is scheduled for 5 August 2014 in the South Hedland Magistrates Court, but may be subject to change.
