Date: Friday, 20 July 2018

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) is seeking feedback on its latest draft guidance note for petroleum, geothermal and pipeline operators in Western Australia.

The document, which has been available for comment on the department’s website since May, is intended to assist companies in their development of site and activity specific environmental performance objectives, environmental performance standards, and measurement criteria for inclusion in Environment Plans. The opportunity to provide feedback closes on 1 August 2018.

DMIRS Resource and Environmental Compliance Division’s Acting Executive Director, Karen Caple said: “We developed the guidance note to address the number of deficiencies in the information being submitted for assessment. Our aim is that it will provide guidance for operators and help them meet the requirements of regulation 14(5) of the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources (Environment) Regulations 2012, the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) (Environment) Regulations 2012 and the Petroleum Pipelines (Environment) Regulations 2012.”

The Guidance Note – Environmental Performance Objectives, Environmental Performance Standards and Measurement Criteria for Petroleum Environment Plans is to be used in conjunction with the Guideline for the Development of Petroleum and Geothermal Environment Plans in Western Australia ,  which further details the requirements of the Regulations and the DMIRS assessment process of Environment Plans.

All comments or feedback in relation to the guidance note should be emailed to petroleum.environment@dmirs.wa.gov.au by 1 August 2018.
