The Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) is seeking feedback on two new draft guidelines designed to support environmental reform in Western Australia.
Over the past two years DMP and the Department of Water have worked in collaboration to develop a Draft Guideline for Groundwater Monitoring in the Onshore Petroleum and Geothermal industry.
It aims to provide assistance to petroleum and geothermal operators to develop effective baseline groundwater monitoring programs.
A Draft Guideline for the Development of an Onshore Oil Spill contingency plan has also been developed to help provide industry stakeholders satisfy their legal obligations and meet the expectations of DMP.
Both guidelines are now available to view on the department’s website and form part of the Reforming Environmental Regulation (RER) strategy to improve transparency of environmental regulation.
Executive Director Environment Dr Phil Gorey encouraged stakeholders to review the recently published draft guidelines and provide feedback.
“The publication of these two draft guidelines further supports the implementation of the department’s RER program,” Dr Gorey said.
“We are committed to working with our stakeholders to develop improvements in the delivery of regulatory services which benefit all Western Australians and over the next eight weeks our stakeholders will have the opportunity to review these draft guidelines and provide us with any direct feedback.
“Once the consultation period has ended all submissions we have received will be reviewed and then published on the department’s web site.”
The Draft Guideline for the Development of an Onshore Oil Spill Contingency Plan and the Draft Guideline for Groundwater Monitoring in the Onshore Petroleum and Geothermal Industry are now available on the DMP website.
Further information on how people can provide feedback is also provided.
