The ability to view HyLogger drillcore data and images from your computer using the updated release of GeoVIEW.WA is featured in the latest edition of Fieldnotes released by DMP’s Geological Survey of Western Australia. 

The ability to view HyLogger drillcore data and images from your computer using the updated GeoVIEW.WA is featured in the latest edition of Fieldnotes released by DMP’s Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA).

This not only allows viewing of mosaic and tray images of scanned drillcore samples via the internet, but also the download of data files for viewing and further analysis.

The HyLogger core scanner is a non-destructive rapid spectroscopic logging and imaging system that uses continuous visible and infrared spectroscopy and digital imaging to examine core.

This edition also features the major Statewide program of magnetotelluric (MT) surveys that have been undertaken over the past five years.

The MT method is a deep-penetrating, passive natural source frequency-domain electromagnetic method that allows mapping of variations in electrical conductivity in the upper crust and mantle.

Electrical variations in the crust may be caused by hydrothermal alteration or the presence of graphite, features which commonly mark the sites of major faults and shear zones, which are indicators of prospectivity.

The most recently published MT results, funded by the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy (KSCS), image the Kimberley Basin and structures associated with the underlying Kimberley Craton.

Other articles include the tectonic links between basin formation and magmatism in the Ablany–Fraser Orogen and estimation of the thickness of sedimentary rocks or regolith from passive seismic data.

Passive seismic is an alternative to other costly and time-consuming approaches involving the measurement of ambient (natural) sound waves in the subsurface, as opposed to reflection seismic that measure sound waves by a controlled source.

There is also an overview of the 1:500 000 State interpreted bedrock geology of Western Australia digital map which forms the base for all GSWA Statewide map and spatial products.

And, as in previous editions of Fieldnotes, there is an update on the Western Australia regional geophysics surveys and a list of all the latest product releases (records, maps and data packages).
