A $70m rail fleet has been launched by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion.

Five locomotives and 400 rail wagons will service Mineral Resources' Carina iron ore project.
Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion has officially launched a $70 million rail fleet that will service Mineral Resources Limited’s Carina iron ore project.
The project, located in the Yilgarn region of Western Australia - approximately 100 kilometres northeast of Southern Cross, has exported more than 7.7 million tonnes of iron ore since operations started in 2011.
During his speech at a special ceremony last week, the Minister praised the company for its commitment to Western Australia’s resources industry.
“By investing in its own fleet of five locomotives and 400 rail wagons, Mineral Resources will be able to build further on its already considerable success,” Mr Marmion said.
As well as servicing the existing Carina iron ore mine, the new trains will also be able to service Mineral Resource’s future developments in the region.
The company has plans to increase the life of the Carina mine through infill and extension drilling at Carina Extended, and has a development project at Bungalbin East.
Mr Marmion said the success of the project stemmed from more than 20 years of hard work by everyone involved in the company.
“This investment promises to improve the output and efficiency of your current operations,” Mr Marmion said.
“More importantly, these trains also represent an investment in the future of your company and the future of Western Australia's resources industry.”
