What is the Board of Examiners?

Establishment

The Board of Examiners is established under section 48 of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994.

Membership

Board members comprise representatives of the mining profession from both industry and academia.

Functions

The Board of Examiners carries out these duties:

  • examines, in accordance with the regulations the qualifications, experience and character of applicants for certificates of competency and issue such certificates where appropriate
  • receives, considers and inquires into complaints concerning holders of certificates of competency and to suspend or cancel such certificate where appropriate
  • performs such other functions as may be conferred in the regulations

Assessment process

The Board of Examiners assesses applications for certificates of competency after candidates have completed and passed an examination determined by the Board.

Certificates of competency assessed by the Board of Examiners include:

  • first class mine manager
  • quarry manager
  • restricted quarry manager
  • underground supervisor
  • winding engine driver.

Mutual recognition

If you have an interstate or New Zealand qualification for any of these occupations, you may qualify for mutual recognition.
