GSWA Industry Ready Graduate Program

Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA)’s Industry Ready Graduate Program will supercharge the next generation’s geoscience skills and data awareness in preparation for a career in the resources sector.

Through unique opportunities for knowledge-sharing and on-the-job applied geoscience training, the program ensures graduates are industry ready, highly skilled and data literate, while incentivising students to complete their Honours year.

Program benefits

The Industry Ready Graduate Program will provide a broad range of advanced and applied geoscience skills which will be applicable across many roles and industry sectors.

Graduates will develop desirable advanced skills including a deep knowledge of all existing geoscience data and a range of networking and communication skills to understand how industry, government and academia interact. With this competitive edge, graduates will be highly sought after.

Who should apply

The program is open to all future geoscientists and data scientists who want to stand up, make a difference, and be a part of the net zero solution.

Be part of something new, upskill in your geoscience knowledge, gain advanced applied geoscience skills, and learn from career geoscientists in a world-leading Geological Survey.

What does it look like

Intake: up to three geoscience or data science students per year, each for a total of two years, and open to graduating third year or honours students from all Western Australian universities. Students will be required to complete the full two years or return any funding received.

Applications will be open twice a year.

First year: students will remain at university and receive a stipend to complete their fourth year Honours program ($35,000) or to complete a Masters with Honours-equivalent research degree ($50,000). GSWA will pay the course fees as well as any associated analytical or equipment costs and will provide in-kind support for any field-based activities.

Second year: After graduating with Honours or a Masters with Honours-equivalent research degree, the graduate will take on a full-time, fully paid, one year placement within GSWA at SCL1.2 level (at a current salary rate of $79,857).

During the placement, the graduate will carry out a range of applied geoscience functions during rotation through different GSWA branches. It is anticipated that the core applied geoscience functions will include advanced lithological and structural field mapping, advanced core logging, sampling and analysis, and geoscience data management.

Alternatively, if the graduate has a very strong focus on a particular subject area, more time may be spent in their area of expertise.
