Resource companies from across Western Australia are being reminded that nominations are now open for the annual Golden Gecko Awards.
The prestigious awards aim to recognise excellence and leadership, and acknowledge the outstanding contribution to ensure that the State’s resources are developed in a responsible manner.
Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) Executive Director Environment Dr Phil Gorey said the awards provided the perfect platform to showcase and celebrate industry advances and innovation in environmental practices.
“The Golden Gecko Awards recognise leading practice and innovation in environmental management,” Dr Gorey said.
“Every year the entrants we receive continue to showcase an inspirational determination to proactively advance and promote environmental excellence in the resources sector and I’m sure 2016 will be no different.”
Last year’s Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence was presented to Chevron Australia for its innovative shoreline crossing solution.
Chevron’s Wheatstone micro-tunnel links a 225km long offshore gas pipeline to the onshore processing facilities, protecting the coastal area adjacent to the Ashburton River Delta.
Certificates of Merit were also presented to Pilbara Mesquite Management Committee Inc and St Barbara Limited.
‘Battling the Thorny Menaces through Corporate Alliances’ saw Pilbara Mesquite Management Committee spearhead a resources company alliance to manage weed control across the Pilbara.
‘St Barbara’s Gwalia Operations Absorption Chiller Upgrade’ more than doubled the cooling capacity of the Gwalia underground mine by converting waste heat energy from the power plant to cool air.
Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion will present the 2016 Golden Gecko winner(s) with their award at DMP’s Golden Gecko Awards for Environmental Excellence night, which will also incorporate the new Community Partnership Award.
