The Aboriginal Empowerment Unit was established within the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) to coordinate and deliver what is known as the Aboriginal Empowerment Initiative.
The unit is a dedicated team focused on building empowerment and connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Part of the department’s Resource and Environmental Regulation Group, the team is focused specifically on the resources industry, ensuring mining and resource projects are developed and regulated in a culturally respectful way.
They support Aboriginal people in understanding government systems and the resources industry, while also guiding DEMIRS staff on effective ways to engage with the Aboriginal community in the course of their work.
With team members who have experience in walking two worlds, the team bridges cultural gaps and facilitates empowerment for all parties involved.
