The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety was formed on 1 July 2017 and is working for a safe, fair and responsible future for the Western Australian community, industry and resources sector.
As the State’s regulator for the resources sector in WA, DMIRS is the lead agency in administering Western Australia’s multi-agency regulatory framework. The department ensures the State’s safety, health and environmental standards are world best practice and consistent with relevant State and Commonwealth legislation, regulations and policies.
It is also responsible for the collection of royalties and has a lead role in providing geoscientific information, which supports private investment in resources exploration and development.
The department’s robust regulation, provision of geological data and innovative management of an equitable and secure titles system helps Western Australia continue to be an attractive destination for investment. This approach also supports the development of the resources sector, which underpins the Western Australia’s economy. DMIRS remains committed to educating the community about resource development and regulation in Western Australia.

Disability access and inclusion
It is a requirement of the Disability and Services Act 1993 that public authorities develop and implement a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan that outlines ways in which the department will ensure that people with disability have equal access to its facilities and services.
DMIRS is committed to delivering on the seven outcomes of the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2019-2023 by improving access to the department’s services, events, facilities, consultation and feedback, employment and information for people with disability.

Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Plan
The department is committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce with a collection of skills, experiences and perspectives that is reflective of the community we serve.
DMIRS demonstrates this commitment by promoting diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities in employment and development. It embraces its obligation under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 to prepare and implement an Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Plan.
While we strive to have equality and diversity built into our day-to-day activities, ensuring we provide equal opportunities to our staff and an inclusive workplace, we recognise some areas do require greater emphasis to ensure equal opportunities and equitable representation for all.
DMIRS has committed to four priority areas for the life of the EEO and Diversity Plan 2017–21:
- Women in Leadership
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People
- Youth
- People with Disability

Transparency policy
DMIRS will ensure that its regulatory, decision making and policy making processes, together with the technical information and data supporting them are, where possible, made publicly available for the benefit of the Western Australian community.
The objective of DMIRS’ Transparency Policy is to give effect to overarching government policy in relation to transparency and the community benefit of access to information.
