MAGIX register of geophysical survey datasets

Most of the datasets registered in MAGIX have been submitted to the department under the requirements of Mining Act legislation. However, any geophysical dataset may be submitted for inclusion in the register, with access conditions specified by the owner of the data. MAGIX also contains datasets from government-funded surveys.

Search for surveys in MAGIX Online or in the ‘Geophysical Surveys’ layers in GeoVIEW.WA, or download the layer files from the Data and Software Centre.

Data access is indicated by the dataset availability attribute:

1. PUBLIC — Open-file company data — download free of charge, or submit an order for delivery on an external hard drive (costs apply).
2. MULTICLIENT — Data available from the nominated sales agent(s) who is obliged to provide the data without undue delay and at a reasonable price. There is no obligation on the agent to provide derivative or value-added products; the agent is free to charge for any such products ordered.
3. CONFIDENTIAL — Datasets available only from the owner of the data. There is no obligation for companies to make their data available while they are still confidential in MAGIX.

There is a list of special-area and State compilation grids and images on the regional geophysical survey data page. State compilation grids and images may also be downloaded from the MAGIX platform and from the GSWA Projects directory in the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre public data store.

Release of a dataset to open file for public access is determined by the conditions under which it was registered in MAGIX.

Online order form for delivery of open-file data on an external hard drive

Rather than downloading multiple individual survey data files, you can purchase an external hard drive containing all currently available open-file company data and government regional data (excluding very large datasets — e.g. hyperspectral,  LiDAR, 3D seismic — for which individual delivery arrangements must be made via the order form). The cost for the drive is $132 (including GST), or the data can be copied to your own supplied drive for a cost of $55 (including GST).

Register a survey dataset via the MAGIX online platform at as an alternative to submitting the data as an attachment to a statutory annual exploration report. You will be prompted to create a DMIRS My Account before you can submit data for registration.

• Only complete survey datasets in industry-standard formats — where possible as delivered by the contractor — will be accepted for registration in MAGIX. Please compress the complete dataset into a zip file before uploading in order to preserve the original folder structure.
• An operations report or acquisition and processing report must be submitted.
• A survey location shapefile must be submitted.

Data access conditions for non-statutory submissions are specified by the owner of the survey data.

Registration conditions for statutory submissions

Once-only reporting — a survey dataset registered in MAGIX need not be submitted again for mineral exploration reporting purposes — simply quote the registration number in any report that makes reference to the survey.

Survey metadata attributes, including location, will be publicly visible regardless of the confidentiality status of the data.

Airborne and remote platform datasets registered in MAGIX are subject to the conditions described in the Airborne Survey Reporting Policy. The essential provisons of the policy are:

• Data from a registered survey will remain confidential for five years from the survey end date, regardless of the underlying tenement situation, or the status of reports in which the survey is referenced.
• There is an optional additional five years confidentiality period if the data are lodged with an independent sales agent for unrestricted commercial sale ('multiclient' data sales period).
• The department does not send out notices alerting owners to the impending expiry of the multi-client conversion option period.
• The data will be released to open file if we do not receive, by the option expiry date, written advice of placement of the data with an independent sales agent, and a copy of the sales agreement.

Ground geophysical datasets will be accepted for registration in MAGIX under the following conditions:

• The dataset will remain confidential for a period of 5 years from the end date of the survey, or when any report in which it is referenced by the registration number is released (whichever is earliest).
• For relinquishment reports, data within the relinquished area must still be submitted with the report — unless you are prepared to quote the registration number in the relinquishment report and release the entire dataset.

If a survey dataset is attached to a statutory report under standard Mining Act conditions, it will be necessary to submit, with every subsequent report, subsections of the survey data to satisfy reporting requirements on individual tenements or relinquished areas. Datasets attached to a statutory report will be released to Open File at the same time as the report.

Open-file data:  The custodian is the department’s Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA).  Download data via MAGIX Online, GeoView.WA or submit a request for data on a USB or external drive (charges may apply).

Confidential data: The custodian is the company that owns the data. There is no obligation for companies to make their data available while they are still confidential in MAGIX.

Multi-client data: The custodian is the nominated sales agent. The agent is obliged to provide the data to anyone who wishes on payment of the prevailing commercial rate for those data. If the agent refuses or is unable to sell the data, contact geophysics@dmirs.wa.gov.au.
