Western Australia’s carbon capture and storage project, South West Hub, was the focus of a Department of Mines and Petroleum presentation at the 13th Greenhouse Gas Technology Conference (GHGT-13) in Switzerland last month.
Held every two years, GHGT-13 is the world’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology conference and attracts approximately 1000 international delegates. The conferences have become the focal point for international research on carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage and rotate amongst North America, Europe and Asia.
Delegates from DMP’s Carbon Strategy team submitted two peer reviewed papers, one on CCS Communications supported by a poster presentation and the second on the South West Hub CCS experience. Both papers will be published in February 2017.
DMP Coordinator of Carbon Strategy Dominique Van Gent said the South West Hub paper focused on the history of the project, geological acquisition and the evolution of static and dynamic modelling in the last five years.
“The presentation was well received and the discussion afterwards demonstrated the importance of determining the feasibility of solubility and residual trapping. This determination is significant for countries with saline storage potential, but lacking structural trapping opportunities,” he said.
Launched in 2010, the South West Hub project is a leading initiative to reduce CO2 emissions in Western Australia.
It was selected in 2011 by the Australian Government as one of two CCS flagship projects and has also received support from the WA State Government and industry.
