GIS event highlights the department’s spatial products and services

The professionalism and skills of more than 150 DMIRS’ technical staff were on show at the department’s GIS Day event.
DMIRS Director General David Smith said the event was a fun celebration of everything spatial, and a great chance to acknowledge the DMIRS staff who work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on a daily basis.
“DMIRS provides world-class spatial services to the Western Australian resources sector, and our staff who work with spatial systems are a crucial part of that success,” he said.
“Their knowledge and the services they provide helps the department regulate the resources sector more effectively, it provides certainty of tenure to help local industry make better decisions and it also helps us promote WA internationally.
“This all contributes to making our State one of the top mining jurisdictions in the world.”
Mr Smith said he was impressed by the number of products and services the department’s technical staff provide to stakeholders.
“Users have downloaded more than 83,000 files and nearly two terabytes of data in the past eight months, and this demand shows no sign of abating,” he said.
GIS Day is an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in society.
The DMIRS event showcased a range of the department’s services, including specialist cartographic products, the innovative design and implementation of multiple online spatial systems, and the provision of spatial data to the public.
