- The McGowan Government streamlines regulation of the resources sector
The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) has successfully cut its assessment timeframes in half for exploration Programme of Work (PoW) applications.
In February, DMIRS announced it would be streamlining its approval timeframe target from 30 to 15 business days, starting on July 1, 2020.
At the end of July, the department had finalised 99 per cent of, or 202 out of 204, PoW decisions within the 15 business day target.
An explorer or prospector must lodge a PoW application before drilling, clearing tracks or using any mechanised equipment for ground disturbing activities.
The PoW application must meet the required environmental expectations, which have not changed with the implementation of the new timeframe.

Comments attributed to Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston:
"The department is off to a flying start, having successfully met the new application timeframes in just the first month - well done to all staff involved.
"The reduction will have a direct benefit to the mining industry and will promote economic activity in the regions.
"The McGowan Government supports an efficient regulatory system that provides appropriate environmental safeguards; we will continue to streamline regulation of the resources sector to reduce barriers and create jobs.
"Fast tracking new mining opportunities is a key part of the McGowan Government's Recovery Plan to continue to keep WA in a strong economic position."
