Leading research organisation partners with DMIRS’s Abandoned Mines Program

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) has embarked on an exciting project as part of the Abandoned Mines Program with leading research organisation The Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute (WABSI).
This six month project will explore the potential biodiversity values and risks associated with abandoned mine shafts in Western Australia and help to develop a methodology to identify and survey the biodiversity values of abandoned mine shafts.
WABSI consists of ten leading research organisations and will assist DMIRS enhance the knowledge, needs and priorities associated with this area of research.
Tyler Sujdovic, the Environment Division’s Acting General Manager Administration and Reform, said he hopes the findings will help to shape the strategic priorities in biodiversity knowledge, deliver excellence in biodiversity research and ensure that biodiversity information is accessible to stakeholders.
“The research will assist the department to work with its stakeholders to develop management strategies for abandoned mine shafts across the state and will ensure the DMIRS’ Abandoned Mines Program continues to be an innovative program that sets the standard for effective and responsible management of abandoned mine sites,” said Mr Sujdovic.
