2017 Golden Gecko entrants share the innovations that are improving environmental outcomes in the resources sector.

Presentations from the 2017 Golden Gecko entrants are now available online.
Five companies have improved the environmental outcomes of their resources projects in Western Australia and their learnings were shared at the 2017 Awards for Excellence seminars in October.
An important part of the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) Awards for Excellence program is to encourage others in the resources sector to continually improve and be at the forefront of social, safety and environmental outcomes.
DMIRS Acting Executive Director Environment, Karen Caple said these projects have demonstrated unique solutions to protecting the environment or rehabilitating areas after mining.
“The resources sector is continually improving their commitment to positive environmental outcomes and some of these projects demonstrate that by engaging more with communities, research institutes and universities to lift the industry standards we all benefit,” she said.
“These awards showcased some of these projects and shared their learnings and advances with the sector.”
The five entrants who presented their projects were:
- Banksia Woodlands – A Restoration Guide for the Swan Coastal Plain - HansonConstruction Materials and Kings Park and Botanic Gardens
- Protecting our Northern Quolls from Introduced Predators - Rio Tinto Iron Ore
- Venturi Reverse Circulation Drilling Waste Removal System - Rio Tinto Iron Ore
- Utilising Mining Technology for the Tracking and Management of Rehabilitation Materials - Roy Hill Holdings
- Leading Practice in Banded Iron Formation Restoration - Sinosteel Midwest Corporationand the Botanic Garden and Parks Authority
