MRF Reporting Guidelines revised to include minerals in brine

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) has recently published a revised Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) Guideline for Reporting.

Available online, the document now includes minerals-in-brine categories and provides guidance to industry on how to report exploration and mining operations for the Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF).

The MRF is a pooled fund that is derived from the collection of an annual levy from holders of Western Australian mining tenements, based on reported environmental disturbance.

Money in the fund pays for the rehabilitation of abandoned mines, throughout the State, in circumstances where a tenement holder or operator has failed to meet rehabilitation obligations and efforts to recover funds have been unsuccessful.

DMIRS Executive Director Resource and Environmental Compliance Karen Caple said the revised guideline includes examples of what disturbance categories may be used by tenement holders to undertake their annual reporting obligations.

“Each tenement holder is obliged to ensure the reported assessment information is true and correct,” Ms Caple said.

“The guideline has been updated to reflect the new categories for minerals-in-brine operations introduced by recent amendments to the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Regulations 2013.

“We have also taken the opportunity to provide further clarity to some existing activity types used in reporting, in response to frequently-asked questions.”
