2014 edition is now available.
Date: Monday, 13 October 2014

The Explorer’s Guide was released at the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s Petroleum and Geothermal Open Day on 11 September.

DMP’s key publication relating to the petroleum and geothermal energy sectors, the Western Australia’s Petroleum and Geothermal Explorer’s Guide – 2014 edition, has been revised and updated. It was recently released at the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s Petroleum and Geothermal Open Day on 11 September.

The Explorer’s Guide was developed specifically for companies considering exploring and investing in Western Australia’s upstream petroleum and geothermal energy industries and for companies currently involved in those industries.

It may also be a reference for the public and other government agencies.

Information in this guide relates predominantly to petroleum and geothermal energy resources activity in Western Australia, its onshore and State Waters areas including islands, which are administered under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967, the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1982, the Petroleum Pipelines Act 1969 and the Petroleum Act 1936.

The Guide is presented in two parts, information and regulation.

Part 1 covers the role of government, petroleum exploration, production and development history, petroleum prospectivity of Western Australia’s sedimentary basins, geothermal energy resources, carbon capture and storage projects, and how to access data.

Part 2 provides general information and guidance on the legislative framework around petroleum and geothermal energy exploration and development, including the environment, safety and resource management regulations. It also provides information on land access (Aboriginal affairs and private land), financial considerations such as royalties and general information about Perth and Western Australia.

All petroleum and geothermal operations must comply with all relevant legislation.
