Response to feedback about stakeholder engagement for hydraulic fracturing

Guideline to ensure stakeholders engaged throughout project lifecycle
Date: Thursday, 15 October 2020

The State Government’s response to stakeholder feedback to a consultation paper about the Proposed Stakeholder Engagement and Consultation Guide for projects undertaking hydraulic fracturing activities is now available.

The public consultation paper was released as part of the Implementation Plan for the State Government’s response to the Independent Scientific Panel Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation in Western Australia.

The paper outlined the proposed addition to the current Guideline for the Development of Petroleum and Geothermal Environment Plans in Western Australia (EP Guideline), which specifically addresses stakeholder engagement and consultation relating to hydraulic fracturing activities.

Hydraulic fracturing in Western Australia is only permitted within an existing petroleum authority area, which is land covered by onshore petroleum titles (exploration permits, retention licences and production licences) existing as of 26 November 2018.

The addition to the EP Guideline seeks to ensure stakeholder engagement and consultation is a priority at the earliest opportunity and throughout every stage of the lifecycle of a project, completing Implementation Plan Action 4.

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) is working to incorporate the additional section into the EP Guideline, together with changes resulting from the public consultation as outlined in the response paper.

The revised EP Guideline will be available on the DMIRS website.
