Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) briefs potential limestone miners

A Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) briefing session this week about two potential limestone extraction sites in Western Australia’s South West region attracted nearly 40 people.
Attendance at the briefing was a mandatory requirement by DMIRS as part of its call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the limestone sites within the State Forest pine plantations near Bagieau Road, midway between Mandurah and Bunbury, about 20km north-west of Harvey.
"The big turnout at the briefing augurs well for the Bagieau Road project," DMIRS Mineral Titles Executive Director Dr Ivor Roberts said.
"South of Perth urgently needs new sources of important basic raw materials such as limestone and it is hoped that Bagieau Road will make a significant contribution to address any future shortage of construction materials in the Mandurah to Bunbury area."
Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston will consider the EOI submissions before making a decision on inviting applications for mining leases.
Dr. Roberts said that it was expected to take about two years from the date of invitation for the mining leases to be granted and extraction could not start until then.
"Any limestone extraction operations within these areas, which are predominantly within pine plantations, will be robustly and stringently regulated to ensure minimal impact on the environment and community, including the lifestyle of nearby residents," he said.
Arrangements have been made for potential limestone extraction operators to visit the two sites next week.
