Six community partnerships from across the State are in the running for the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s 2019 Community Partnership Resources Sector Award.
The partnership projects ranging from education, early childhood development, employment, and sporting infrastructure, aim to provide a long-lasting legacy in local communities.
They will be judged against three criteria: leadership and innovation in establishing a partnership; benefits of the collaboration; and a demonstrated commitment to providing enduring and sustainable outcomes.
The winner of the Community Partnership Resources Sector Award will be announced at the department’s Resources Sector Awards for Excellence on August 22, 2019, along with the Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence.

The finalists are:
Alcoa Harvey Waroona Sustainability Fund, Shire of Waroona, Shire of Harvey and Alcoa of Australia
The Alcoa Harvey Waroona Sustainability Fund was a convergence of like-minded parties seeking an innovative change in community investment of substance. Now in its 11th year, the fund is designed to ensure Alcoa Australia and the Harvey and Waroona communities succeed together, with a plan to provide for meaningful community projects for 20 years and beyond.
Sensory Nature Play Space, Hannans Primary School Parents and Citizens Association and Evolution Mining
The Nature Play Space has provided Hannans Primary School students with the opportunity to play in a natural, enriching environment, creating fun experiences for varying age groups, improving speech and language, confidence and social skills. Children from Full Circle Autism Centre are also able to travel to the school and use the Nature Play Space as part of their ongoing therapy.
Shooting Stars and Sandfire Resources, Glass Jar Australia and Sandfire Resources
The Shooting Stars Program at Meekatharra District High School aims to increase school attendance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls in Meekatharra. Shooting Stars engages participants with leadership development opportunities, health and wellbeing workshops, cultural and sports excursions, reward camps and award nights.
Woombooriny Aambooriny United Partners Initiative Project, Save the Children Australia and Woodside Energy
The Woombooriny Aambooriny United Partners Initiative Project is a place-based, community-led approach to improve early childhood outcomes for Aboriginal children, setting up a platform for long-term change. The focus is on building strong local leadership to enable the communities to drive decision making, agree on priorities for early childhood development and collaboratively create solutions.
Community Infrastructure and Services Partnership, City of Karratha and Rio Tinto Iron Ore
The City of Karratha and Rio Tinto embarked on an innovative social investment project to bring together all of the various sponsorship arrangements for events, programs and infrastructure into a single, long-term partnership. The key objectives are to enhance the wellbeing of all residents by creating meaningful change and positive improvements at a grassroots level.
P242 Pre-Employment Program, the Wirrpanda Foundation and Shell Australia
The Plan 2day 4 2morrow (P242) program is a pre-employment program for long-term unemployed Aboriginal job seekers aged over 18 years in the Perth metropolitan region.
The group program runs weekly and delivers activities aimed at improving physical fitness, self-confidence and networking opportunities. Employers and service providers present at these sessions weekly, while Aboriginal mentors work with jobseekers and employers to create sustainable employment opportunities.
