DG's Enews highlights how Western Australia has again led mining investment in the country

As the holiday season is almost here and 2016 is fast coming to an end, the final DG Enews for the year sends some positive messages for the resources sector.
This edition highlights how Western Australia has again led mining investment in the country, attracting 66 per cent of the nation’s total mining investment in 2015-16, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
DMP acting Director General Dr Tim Griffin said the recent standout performance of gold and a record volume of iron ore exports have offered some reprieve in what has been a difficult year for the resources industry following the decline of many commodity prices.
“It is encouraging to see that mineral exploration activity applications in WA are up by 25 per cent since the third quarter last year, and exploration activity in 2016 to date has showed positive signs of recovery from the lower levels of planned activity in 2015,” he said.
“Western Australia’s global leadership in the field of autonomous mining equipment and its safe operation is also being showcased globally with the development of new international guidelines for industry.”
Canadian-based Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group is developing the new international guidelines based on the world first code of practice developed by Department of Mines and Petroleum.
The latest edition of the DG’s eNews is now available and accessible at www.dmp.wa.gov.au/subscribe, along with the full range of online subscriptions.
In the past two years more than 18,000 people have signed up for online newsletters, alerts and RSS feeds distributed by the department.
“We now have eNewsletters from Mineral Titles, the Environment Division, and the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA), as well as my own DG’s eNews,” Dr Griffin said.
“We also have RSS feeds and news alerts covering areas such as Resources Safety, natural gas from shale and tight rocks and approval performance reports.”
Dr Griffin said the department’s online subscriptions provided valuable information about Western Australia’s mining and petroleum industry from a DMP perspective.
