The Department of Mines and Petroleum is currently running a series of workshops to assist industry with the new mining proposal guidelines which were released in May 2016.

The workshops will be a guide to better identifying environmental risks and outcomes, which are new processes for mining proposals.
Interest in the workshops has been very high and all four organised to date have been oversubscribed.
DMP Environment division director of operations Marnie Leybourne said there had been no changes to Programmes of Work or to the “mining proposals for small operations” forms, which are used to cover exploration, prospecting and small mining operations.
“Therefore, the focus of these workshops has been to cover issues being experienced by medium and large scale mining operations in the implementation of the new mining proposal guidelines,” she said.
“Small operations are not affected by these guidelines.”
DMP has been very pleased with the success of the workshops on the new guidelines, and has scheduled a second Kalgoorlie workshop, to be held on 28 March. This workshop will be identical in format and information to the first Kalgoorlie workshop being held on 28 February.
In addition, DMP plans to run further workshops later in 2017 for medium and small operations that primarily use the “mining proposal for small operations” form. Further workshops will also be held on other aspects of the mining proposal guidelines given the interest shown by industry to date and these will be extensively advertised.
